The Air Force is buying new F-15s (the F-15EX), and like its bigger brother, foreign sales have kept the F-16 continuously upgraded with the latest technology. Why doesn’t the Air Force consider buying new F-16s? That’s a good question. The new “four-and-a-half-gen” fighter Brown is talking about would be that airframe. The Air Force committed to buy 1,763 F-35As, but if it trims its F-35 order, it will still need airframes to fill its squadrons. The Air Force has also warned that if the cost doesn’t drop, the service could end up buying fewer F-35s. Since 2019, the Air Force and Lockheed Martin have been trying to get the cost per hour down to $25,000, but the Pentagon has long believed that number may be unattainable. The Air Force will consider a “clean sheet design” for a new “four-and-a-half-gen or fifth-gen-minus” fighter as a direct replacement for the F-16s currently in service, Brown said. Brown recently said at a media event, per Breaking Defense. The Air Force is launching a study into what mix of tactical aircraft the service should field in the 2020s, Air Force Chief of Staff C.Q. The new plane will likely lack the stealth of the F-35, but could pack many of its other features. While the service was once committed to replacing the F-16 with the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter, it appears to be having second thoughts, as the cost of the latter jet remains sky-high. Air Force is thinking about buying a brand new fighter jet to partially replace the F-16 Fighting Falcon.

On the other hand, The Bourne Ultimatum did $70 Million during its opening weekend. There are certainly some scenes where handheld is the perfect way to tell the story, but not to the point of making the audience seasick. It’s possible that seeing this film in an IMAX theater exaggerates the issue, but even so there is a great deal of shaky camera movement in that film. The Ebert article includes quite a list of reader complaints about the style.

In an article called “The Shaky-Queasy-Utimatum,” the late film critic Roger Ebert writes about a letter he received from a renowned film academic who saw the movie in an IMAX theater, but the person sitting next to him threw up all over his leg as a result of the exaggerated shaky cam and fast editing. One film franchise that best exemplifies this style is “The Bourne Ultimatum which is the third in the Bourne film series, preceded by The Bourne Identity, The Bourne Supremacy, and The Bourne Legacy. There’s a trend in modern action-adventure thrillers to use shaky cam and very fast editing. Handheld shots bring an immediacy to a scene, but they can be overdone. See The Art Of Film And Video Editing – The Director Becomes Editor. The American documentary style called “cinema verite” was often shot handheld as were the films of the French New Wave. Feature films that used handheld cinematography include such titles as The Miracle Worker, The Blair Witch Project, Easy Rider, Seven Days in May, The Battle of Algiers and Dr. In the 1960s filmmakers had the advantage of using smaller cameras that could easily be handheld. The original film cameras used for shooting movies with sound were too large for handholding so nearly all shots were made from a tripod, dolly, or crane. When used to excess, the shaky cam technique can make viewers feel sick. It is often used in fights and other action scenes. Shaky cam, also called queasy cam, is a cinematic technique used to give a scene an ENG (electronic news-gathering) or documentary look to persuade viewers that the subject or scene being filmed was happening live without rehearsal or any artifice.
